I mean, seriously. Sometimes it feels as though every time I kiss Dave goodbye and enter an airport, I immediately stumble headfirst into disaster. In fact, as Dave drove me to the airport in Christchurch, I merrily announced that I was certain no bad luck would befall me. I have common sense now.
Hi, I know all the guide books say the Cook Islands are safe, etc.

Is this really a problem in the CI? Would it be safe to travel there as a single female? As long as you take the proper precautions, the Cook Islands are one of the safest places to vacation single. Don't stay in a place that is isolated and leave your doors unlocked, etc. Don't go out, get drunk and trust a stranger, etc. There are very few real predators here, but there are jerks who will take advantage of a situation.
If you get my meaning. Usually the attacks on women are of the domestic variety. Of course the odd time a real attack will take place but again it's usually due to the fact that the woman has put herself in a position where such an attack is possible. This is a fact everywhere in the world as there are predators everywhere just waiting for someone to make themselves vulnerable. I got broken into twice here and the first time was due to leaving a door unlocked, the second time was someone who knew us well and knew where we kept a spare key.
Hi, thanks a lot for your quick reply and all the info! I know I will need to take the usual precautions, I am aware of that. Do such things happen in Rarotonga?
My solo travel curse continues in the cook islands
A house is fine as long as it's not isolated and a long way from another house, my friend comes and stays in a house alone and has rented all over the island and she's never had a problem. We don't have weirdos running around looking to hurt tourists, they are looking for cash, alcohol and small electronics and in general will run away if caught. It's mostly .
Make sure you keep your door locked even when you're home and don't leave any desirable items in sight. Great, thanks a lot. I appreciate your help and advice.
Judging from what you have written, I guess, those were linked to women not taking the common sense precautions and not any planned invasions on anyone's home. I am looking forward to finding some peace in the Cooks then. Just curious - which country is considered a safe place for a lone travelling woman to travel to?
I guess you are implying that NZ is safer then the Cooks because that's where you live? Just seems a strange question to ask.
Sure, if you were travelling to the Highlands of Papua New Guinea - then I guess there would be serious concerns. But I can't say that the Cooks have ever made international headlines because of continuous abuse of woman.
I didn't mean to offend anybody. I just heard an opinion that foreign women need to be extra careful in the Cooksa and I read in one guide book that "there has been a ificant increase in the of rapes" in the Cook Islands. I have never been there before and just wanted to hear what other people have to say about this.
While I do suspect that the Cook Islands are safe, I just wanted to check what it is like for a single woman to rent a house there. I am just a bit concerned with the fact that every single person I have spoken with who lives in Rarotonga has been robbed at least once break ins. This isn't normal. Granted there has been an increase in burglaries but keep in perspective the term 'increase' Even one more break-in from the weeks three is an increase. Tourists are also seen as being easy targets because many will drop there guard and be lulled into a false sense of 'everything is lovely in paradise' The same care and precautions that you take in your own country should be exercised wherever you might travel.
Even I will leave my car unlocked when shopping in town and if my belongings are taken - then it's my fault for being so stupid.
